A team from the Geological Survey and Road Maintenance Authority inspects sites threatened by rockslides in Al Mahwit

A technical team from the Geological Survey and Mineral Resources Authority conducted a field visit to several sites threatened by rockslides in Al Mahwit Governorate.

The directors of the Rock Cover Hazards Project at the Authority, Dr. Aref Al-Jabali, and the Executive Unit for Road Maintenance in Al Mahwit Governorate, Engineer Mohammed Al-Qahtani, were briefed on the nature of the mountainous areas threatened by recurrent rockslides, especially during the heavy rainy season.

The team also visited several threatened sites and conducted a preliminary assessment of the rock structure, soil, and mountain slopes.

Al-Jabali emphasized that the field visit is part of efforts to study the geological situation and develop appropriate solutions and treatments to mitigate the risks threatening citizens’ lives and property, and is part of the Authority’s action plan to reduce geological risks in various governorates. He pointed out that the study will help develop well-thought-out technical solutions, including the construction of retaining walls and the implementation of precautionary measures and solutions in the most dangerous areas.

For his part, Engineer Al-Qahtani praised the Authority’s interest and continuous monitoring of mountainous areas threatened by rockslides, noting that the governorate needs urgent and sustainable interventions to secure villages and homes located below the mountain slopes.

He considered coordination between the local authority and the relevant technical agencies a first step towards protecting citizens from the dangers of rockslides.

A number of citizens confirmed that their suffering from rockslides is worsening year after year, expressing hope that the studies will contribute to finding rapid solutions to protect residents.

The team visited the site of the retaining wall work to protect the home of citizen Khaled Al-Aqbi from sliding and collapse due to damage caused by heavy rains in the Al-Naq’a area on the Ring Road.
