Launch of the 10,000 Palm Tree Planting and Solar Lighting Network in Hodeidah

The Minister of Transport and Public Works, Mohammed Qahim, the Governor of Hodeidah, Abdullah Otaifi, and the First Deputy Governor, Ahmed Al-Bishri, today launched the project to plant 10,000 palm trees and install a solar-powered lighting network.

The afforestation project, funded by the Cleanliness and Improvement Fund, includes planting palm trees on main and side streets and public parks, starting from the entrance to Hodeidah city, Al-Safina Roundabout, as part of a comprehensive afforestation plan, combating desertification, and improving the urban environment in line with the city’s agricultural identity.

The project includes installing a solar-powered lighting network from Al-Gharasi Roundabout to Al-Shaab Park, funded by the United Nations Programme for Project Services (UNOPS), under the supervision of the Public Works Sector. The project aims to enhance public lighting and provide a safe environment for pedestrians and vehicles. At the inauguration, Minister Qahim considered such projects a qualitative step in the process of rehabilitating Hodeidah and improving the quality of life for its residents. He highlighted the importance of expanding clean energy and afforestation projects as sustainable and environmentally friendly solutions.

He pointed out that the inauguration of these projects falls within the framework of the Government of Change and Construction’s efforts to improve services and living conditions in the governorate, emphasizing that Hodeidah deserves all efforts due to its strategic importance, vital location, and popular and cultural presence.

Governor Atifi, for his part, emphasized the commitment to completing urban improvement projects in various service areas and districts, reflecting the directives of the revolutionary leadership and the Supreme Political Council and their commitment to the governorate.

He noted that the lighting project represents the first of a series of projects that will later expand to include other neighborhoods and regions, explaining that the choice of solar energy aligns with the government’s efforts to reduce dependence on fossil fuels and promote sustainability. The first deputy governor, Al-Bishri, explained that the palm planting project includes a thoughtful distribution of trees, consistent with the nature of the streets and parks. This will contribute to reducing temperatures, providing a better environmental climate, and adding an aesthetic touch to the city.

For his part, the director of the Cleanliness and Improvement Fund, Abdul Nasser Al-Sharif, indicated that the project is part of a strategic plan aimed at planting various types of fruit and ornamental trees, as part of afforestation and environmental programs.

The inauguration was attended by the directors of the Office of Economy, Industry and Investment, Saleh Atifa; the Chamber of Commerce, Mohammed Al-Hattami; the Director of Tribal Affairs, Ibrahim Sharaei, and local leaders.
