Iranian investigator: Israel is most likely responsible for the container ship attack

Iranian media quoted an Iranian investigator as saying that Israel was likely behind the attack in the Mediterranean last week, which damaged an Iranian container ship

On Friday, Iran said that the container ship “Shahrkord” was hit by a shell that caused a small fire in the ship, but no one was injured on its back.

Two marine security sources said that initial indications indicated that the ship was deliberately targeted from an unknown source.

The semi-official “Noor News” agency quoted an unnamed member of the Iranian team investigating the incident as saying, “Given the geographical location and the way in which the ship was targeted, one of the strong possibilities is that this terrorist operation was carried out by Israel.”

Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Saeed Khatibzadeh said on Saturday that the reports confirmed a sabotage attack “in clear violation of international law.”

Israeli officials did not comment on Friday when asked whether Israel had a role in the incident, which occurred on Wednesday.
