A meeting in the fight against corruption on the role of civil society in activating the contents of the national strategy

 

The Supreme National Anti-Corruption Authority organized a coordination meeting on the role of civil society organizations in activating and implementing the contents of the National Anti-Corruption Strategy 2022-2026.

Dr. Maryam Al-Joufi, a member of the Supreme National Anti-Corruption Authority and head of the Awareness and Education Committee, confirmed that the meeting comes in implementation of one of the main themes of the national anti-corruption strategy, related to awareness, education and community participation, and embodiment of the slogan raised by the authority, “Partners in preparing the strategy, partners in its implementation.”

She pointed out that the meeting, in which 30 leaders and representatives of civil society organizations participate, also comes within the framework of achieving the strategic goal of promoting a culture of anti-corruption among state agencies and institutions and Yemeni society.

Dr. Al-Joufi considered civil society organizations as one of the most prominent parties to the national integrity system due to the active role they play in instilling the values ​​of integrity and transparency, raising awareness about combating and preventing corruption, and activating the principle of oversight and social accountability, mobilization, advocacy, monitoring and reporting of corruption crimes.

She explained that the coordination meeting aims to restore the authority’s true partnership with civil society organizations to its true status, based on the legal commitment to the system of national and international legislation related to combating corruption, as it is one of the parties to the national system of integrity, and to introduce civil society organizations to the role assigned to them in activating and implementing the contents of the strategy.

She expressed the authority’s aspiration for an active role for local councils in the work, tasks and competencies stipulated in the Local Authority Law in supervising and controlling the performance of the executive authorities and the implementation of the contents of the national anti-corruption strategy in the field of oversight, accountability and community participation.

For his part, a member of the Supreme National Anti-Corruption Commission, member of the Investigation and Investigation Committee, Dr. Abdulaziz Al-Kumaim, pointed out that the meeting is the first in the framework of implementing the national anti-corruption strategy, noting that the meeting was dedicated to civil society organizations.

He praised the activity of the Awareness and Education Department of the Authority, which initiated the establishment of a qualitative event within the framework of the implementation of the strategy, expressing hope that the meeting will come out with a clear vision and define joint steps and programs between the Authority and civil society organizations.

In turn, Head of the Social Affairs Committee in the Capital Municipality, Hammoud Al-Naqeeb, confirmed that the Municipality, in implementation of the contents of the national anti-corruption strategy, in partnership with the authority, will work during the coming period to implement expanded meetings on the role of the local authority in combating and preventing corruption and building the capacities of members of the local authority through an awareness and training program It is concerned with promoting transparency and integrity and combating and preventing corruption.

He pointed out that the local councils are like miniature councils of representatives to monitor the organs of local authorities.. He reviewed the role of the councils in controlling these organs at the level of directorates and governorates, in addition to that they represent societal control over the work of civil society organizations.

Al-Naqeeb explained that the local councils came as a basis for expanding popular participation and choosing the community for representation in the process of monitoring the work of local authority bodies.

The speech of civil society organizations, delivered by the head of the Education for All Coalition, Issam Al-Alfi, in which he reviewed the history of organizations in combating corruption in Yemen since before the establishment of the Supreme National Anti-Corruption Authority.

He pointed out the importance of creating a vision that defines the role of civil society organizations in combating corruption during crises and emergencies, and their role in advancing the performance of state institutions, stressing the readiness of civil society organizations to provide ideas and solutions to problems of corruption, combating and preventing it.

While the Head of the Education and Awareness Department at the Anti-Corruption Authority, Adel Al-Uqbi, gave a presentation on the role of civil society organizations in implementing the contents of the national anti-corruption strategy.

And he indicated that the coordination meeting is the first after the announcement of the launch of the strategy, and it will be followed by other meetings.. He reviewed the legal and legislative framework that regulates and governs the relationship between the Supreme National Anti-Corruption Authority and civil society organizations, in addition to reviewing programs and projects that organizations and the authority can partner with for its preparation. and implement it.

The meeting, which was attended by a number of officials in the Anti-Corruption Commission, was enriched by a discussion by leaders and representatives of civil society organizations.
