A UN delegation visits the port of Hodeida and reviews its service and relief activities and its most prominent needs in terms of rehabilitation and development projects

 

A meeting was held at the headquarters of the Yemen Red Sea Ports Corporation, Thursday 17-3-1444 AH, which included the First Undersecretary of the Hodeida Governorate, Ahmed Mahdi Al-Bishri, the CEO of the Corporation, Captain Mohammed Abu Bakr bin Ishaq, and the Assistant Secretary-General for Humanitarian Affairs – Deputy Emergency Relief Coordinator Joyce Msuya and the accompanying delegation For her, the issues related to the operational and service aspects of the ports of Hodeida and Salif and their most prominent needs of rehabilitation and development projects in light of the destruction and direct targeting of them by the aggression.

The meeting was attended by the United Nations Resident Coordinator for Humanitarian Affairs “OCHA” in Yemen William David Gressly, the Regional Director of the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs in the Middle East and North Africa Tariq Talahmeh, the Director of the United Nations Office in Yemen Sajjad Mohammed Sajid, and the Governorate’s Undersecretary for Services Affairs Mohammed Halisi, touched to The projects committed by the United Nations Development Program ( UNDP ) to rehabilitate the port of Hodeida in accordance with the Stockholm Agreement.

In the meeting, the President of the Foundation reviewed the importance of the role of the Foundation’s ports in meeting the people’s needs of basic and necessary materials… explaining that 90 percent of the materials and humanitarian and relief aid for the United Nations organizations arrive through the port of Hodeida.

He pointed out that the total direct and indirect losses and damages suffered by the port as a result of the aggression and the siege exceeded two billion dollars.

He pointed out that there were many meetings held by the Foundation with UN delegations, resulting in agreements and studies with the Development Program to implement an emergency treatment program that was identified through three emergency, processions and strategic tracks at a cost of $713 million. Waiting for implementation.

Captain Ishaq stressed the importance of expediting the implementation of the Hodeida port rehabilitation projects by the United Nations Development Program, expressing regret for the slowdown in implementation, as the port suffers from a significant shortage of priority equipment and devices from the cranes, which were deliberately targeted by the aggression to stop the operational process. at the port.

He noted that the coalition of aggression is still practicing maritime piracy on fuel ships despite their being subject to prior inspection, which represents a clear violation of the Geneva Conventions, all international laws and the provisions of the armistice.

 

He stressed the need to allow the Corporation to import spare parts necessary for the machinery and equipment for handling containers, which is a paramount necessity for the continuity of the operational process, as the prevention of their import by the aggression represents a real threat to the port and the suspension of its activity during the coming period, in addition to the port’s need to provide new mechanisms instead of the ones that destroyed it aggression.

He valued the efforts of the UN mission and humanitarian organizations in alleviating the suffering of Yemenis as a result of the aggression and siege.

Meanwhile, the Assistant Secretary-General for Humanitarian Affairs – Deputy Emergency Relief Coordinator Mission expressed her thanks and appreciation for the warm reception and facilities she received during her visit to Hodeida, its port, and the Al-Thawra General Hospital Authority.

She indicated that her visit to the governorate is her first visit.. She made it clear that she will transmit everything she saw and report on this in all transparency and clarity.

In turn, the United Nations Resident Coordinator for Humanitarian Affairs “OCHA” in Yemen stressed that the bridge cranes in the port of Hodeida represent a great priority, and we will mobilize resources to provide them.

William Gressly pointed out that the civil aviation authority’s devices, which were held for three years, were entered in Djibouti.

The UN delegation, along with the leadership of the local authority in the governorate and the institution, made an inspection visit to the berths of the port, during which they were briefed on the operational process in the port and the destruction and direct targeting of the bridge cranes by the aggression’s aircraft
