For the second day, Emirates Airlines lay off hundreds of pilots and flight attendants

For the second consecutive day, Emirates Airlines continued the layoffs of pilots and flight crews, after a liquidity crisis caused by the Corona pandemic, and caused great economic damage to the company.

Reuters quoted 3 Emirates Airlines sources as saying that more layoffs are expected this week, which includes pilots working on the Airbus A380 and Boeing 777 aircraft.

She added that the company informed those who have been laid off that their jobs have become redundant.

And the Arabian Business website quoted “informed sources” that Emirates Airlines has laid off more than a thousand employees, including 700 crew and 600 pilots, most of whom worked on Airbus A380 aircraft.

Emirates Airlines said to the site: “As we mentioned earlier, we at Emirates Airlines do everything we can to retain the talented people who make up our workforce (…) We have to adjust the size of our workforce in line with our reduced operations.

And the aviation sector is one of the sectors most affected by the repercussions of the outbreak of the Corona virus, with airlines around the world laying off employees and seeking financial rescue from governments.

The company, affiliated to the Dubai government, said the latter had pledged to provide it with new liquidity that would allow it to retain its skilled workforce.

Since then, the company has stated that it could take four years to resume flights across its entire network of 157 international destinations that had served it before the pandemic.

The company was on the 31st of last month, layoffs of trained pilots and aircraft crew.

“We sought to keep the current family as it was, and we reviewed all possible scenarios in order to maintain our operations, but we have come to the conclusion that we are unfortunately forced to bid farewell to a few wonderful people who worked with us,” a spokeswoman said.

“We confirm our commitment to do our utmost to maintain all of our employees whenever possible,” she added.

The company did not say how many workers and employees were affected by the layoff. Emirates Airlines is state-owned, it belongs to the Emirates Group and employs about 60,000 people.

The Emirates Group, the government holding company that includes Emirates Airlines, has laid off some workers at its subsidiary Dnata Airport Services.
