IATA for the G20: Act quickly to support the aviation industry

The International Air Transport Association (IATA), on Thursday, urged the Group of Twenty, which includes the largest economies in the world, to move quickly to prevent irreparable damage to airlines that were rocked by the Corona virus crisis.

In an open letter on the day the G20 leaders held their meeting, the world’s largest aviation sector agency asked governments to provide or facilitate financial support for the industry.

The spread of the Covid-19 epidemic around the world, and the resulting governments imposing border closures and travel restrictions, has destroyed the demand for air travel,” IATA Chief Executive Alexander de Juniac wrote in the letter.

The International Air Transport Association “IATA” said: The losses of the global aviation sector may range between $ 63 billion and $ 113 billion this year.

In a previous statement, which was seen by Al Arabiya.net, the Federation stated that a reassessment of its analyzes on the financial effects of the emerging Corona virus “Covid-19” indicates that the aviation sector losses may amount to about $ 63 billion in the event that the disease is controlled, but he sees If the disease spreads more widely, the losses could reach $ 113 billion.

He explained that the effect of the virus on air cargo operations is not available now.

This comes after IATA predicted last February that the losses amount to $ 29.3 billion, based on its prediction that the disease will spread to markets that are linked to China. But after the disease has spread to more than 80 countries, reservations have been greatly affected throughout the world, according to the statement.

The deadly virus “Corona” caused the collapse of one of the largest airlines in Europe, after more than two months after the severe losses suffered by the decline in demand for its services and the preference of most travelers to cancel their flights and shorten their movements for fear that they would fall prey to infection.

The British company (Flybe) announced its collapse earlier and the layoff of more than two thousand people from its employees, after successive losses it incurred since the beginning of this year. “.

The British Guardian newspaper said in a report seen by Al Arabiya.net that the effect of the sharp drop in reservations due to the Corona virus was the last straw that led to the collapse of the company, which is based in Exeter, England, as a headquarters for it and its air operations.

According to “The Guardian” information, “Flybe” company operates more than 40% of domestic flights in Britain, and it is one of the largest and most famous airlines in the European continent.
